Energy Tech Review has recognized Utah FORGE as its “Top Enhanced Geothermal Systems Research Platform 2026,” highlighting the project’s work to overcome the geographic and technical limitations that have traditionally constrained geothermal development.
The article describes how Utah FORGE creates engineered geothermal reservoirs in hot crystalline rock through hydraulic stimulation, allowing heat extraction in locations without naturally occurring permeability. It also highlights advances in drilling technology that have increased penetration rates from roughly 10–15 feet per hour to more than 100 feet per hour while extending drill-bit longevity to as much as 2,000 feet.
Beyond field testing, the article emphasizes Utah FORGE’s role as a collaborative research platform for universities, private companies, and research organizations. Its publicly available data and ongoing research into heat retention, water recovery, drilling optimization, well design, and high-temperature tools are helping establish the technical foundation needed for scalable enhanced geothermal systems.
